Comments: The Glacier looks a lot different than it did when I was aboard the USS Atka AGB-3 from April '64 to Sept. '65. She was our sister ship at that time. I can identify with anyone that spent time in the Artic, did two cruises myself and even took and unexpected swim in Thule, Greenland. I would not trade any of those days for even the warmest sea duty. The scenery was unbeleivable. Good Luck in the future!!

Comments: I participated in Deep Freeze '78 - '79 as Deck Cadet in the USNS MAUMEE (T-AO 149). One of the more memorable moments of that voyage was a collision with the GLACIER. While breaking ice in McMurdo Sound with the MAUMEE following close astern, the GLACIER ground to a sudden halt. As you might imagine, that caused quite a bit of excitment on the bridge of the MAUMEE. By the time we got that old steam turbine going the other way, we had swapped some paint with the Coasties, caved-in a plate or two, and made a mess of the GLACIER's flight deck netting. There was some highly animated, (but mostly good-natured) discussion about the event in the O Club a few days later. I think I still have pictures somewhere.

MARAD just announced that after 30 years of faithful service and 20 years of rotting in the NDRF, the MAUMEE will be going to the breakers in December, 2006. As many of you know, the ship was built with a specially reinforced bow for operation in ice and was a veteran of many Deep Freeze and Thule trips. I'm sure she spent lots of time in the care of the GLACIER.

Comments: I am a life time member of the BURTON ISLAND ASSOCIATION & truley respect your efforts to get GLACIER up & running. We were standing by a couple of times in Antartica for GLACIER when she got stuck & thought she might have to winter over. We were called the "TOY BOAT" cause we were smaller than GLACIER. But look at who they called on when they were in trouble!!! I had alot of fond memories in the COAST GUARD & would not trade the experience in any way..
Regards & sucess.....

Comments: Yeah, I remember you guys from Deep Freeze 80. You were truly the heart and soul of Big Red. Wow! What an adventure that was! The fires in the stack, running a ground at McMurdo in a snow storm, The storms at sea - especially that great big one on the way back when we lost the landing craft, the equatorial initiation, "Porthole" running down the pier in New Zealand as the ship was pulling away just to make it aboard at the last second and the cheer that went up when he made it. I went on to become an AT and flew on C-130s out of Air Station McClellan. Now I'm a pharmacist...where the hell is the adventure in that?

Comments: I sailed aboard Glacier during arctic winter west `78 and deep freeze `80 (B2 engine room) I also was the ships artist and designed the cruise logo, patch and out bound mail ink stamp. I painted 5 murals on the interior of the ship while underway for both trips, I am looking for any pictures of these murals before the ship was decomissioned. I painted (air brush using ships air supply) the mess deck (tropical scene with scooner on the horizion)- the forward ladder passageway ( polar bear in ice)- the mid ships ladder passageway ( crater lake )- athwart ships passageway (world mural with antarctica in center and uscg cutters) M&R berthing dayroom (cutter and landscape) first class mess-(popeye on door) not sure if any pictures are around, other than any crew that could have taken photos. any information would be appreciated. I made another north and south trip aboard Polar Star `80 & `81 as AD2 flight crew. Again as ships artist I did the cover for the ships newspaper and characterized the captain (T C Volkle) and all the different problems with the screws and various other funny cartoons. These I have copies of. I had also sent $ years ago to join the Glacier society but never heard anything.
thanks

Comments: Wow, this site sure brings back great memories. I was 18 when I served on the Glacier in 76’ for a north artic run (~July - Sept). After arriving up north we loaded fuel from the Westwind who was heading back to port, after which we sat deep in the water/ice. So deep in fact, during one of the scientific under water ops, we had a polar bear rise up on its back legs and lean up against the port fan tail. I could almost have reached down and touched its front paws, which were six feet lower than the fan tail deck. There are other memories of course, almost all of them good; Such as the peace and tranquility when I looked out over the ice and sea on a summer night when the sun was low on the horizon.

I served in B1 as an FN and my uniform consistently smelled of fuel oil. I remember helping with the cylinder sleeves and wire-tying what seemed liked hundreds of nuts on an engine over haul, and cleaning the oily water separator.

The Glacier went to dry dock after that run, and when I saw her out of the water I was truly amazed. What a great ship, that gave many crew members some very fine memories. I am proud to be a part of her history. Good luck on her restoration.

Comments: MST2 Brian C. Bentzley (DF80, DF81 and DF82) – The following I wrote on January 19, 2001; I corrected some words and here is the repost: Damn, it is great seeing the names of my old shipments here!!!! When I visited this site and the related sites, I started to relive those fantastic years. If I had known the importance of those years at the time, I would have bought all three cruise books. I was frugal and only have the DF80 book. Maybe someone could scan their cruise books from DF81 and DF82 with Adobe Acrobat and post them in Fred’s Place? • The times on the fantail: drinking coffee mixed with hot chocolate, country music in the background, performing piston coring operations led by Dr. John B. Anderson. • Bumping the dirty berg with the ship’s prow; attempting to get a soil sample using plastic piston coring sleeves. • Of course, the loss of the LCVP will always be remembered and recounted. • The Fanning Island incident; I was in ops berthing at the time and can give a description of the ever-accelerating-sound/vibration coming from the anchor windlass, followed by silence. • Which Deep Freeze did we loose power to a screw on the way to Punta Arenas? That is the worst place for it to occur. • Steadily making way through the pack ice in the Ross Sea, surrounded by a brown ice fog with the odor of sulfur due to an erupting Mount Erebus. This was true adventure bordering on science fiction. No job since has enriched me more nor giving me a greater feeling of accomplishment than I experienced on Big Red with so many good friends.
