Comments: Deep Freeze '87 and decommissioning crew. I recognize your names from that deployment boys, and Richie, I believe we did DF '88, AWS '88, AES 89', and DF '90 together on Polar Star. Bizzare to read that some of these guys are still in, and nearing retirement as I've been 14 years a civilian now.
Decom memories are the packaging of all parts, tools, etc. on the way home from that DF with a stop in Maui. Had to be in dress uniform for the trip up the Columbia to Portland so some of us hit the liquor store in Astoria the night before and never came out of the hole. Okay, you can wait 'til retirement for those stories.
Laesed a warehouse on Swan Island from Freightliner and I can tell you from working that site that we took over 840 pallets off that ship.
Seems like yesterday and a lifetime ago all at the same time. Best to all. Breaker sailors were a brotherhood.

Comments: I was a member of the eleven man US Army Air Forces weather station crew at Walrus Bay (near Scoresbysund) NE Greenland from August 1945 to August 1946. USCGC Storis helped take us in through the pack ice in Aug '45, and brought us home the following year. In August 2002, I returned to the area on my own as a "tourist". In February 2005, I went with a small tour group to the Antarctic Peninsula area on a converted Russian research vessel. An even more impressive experience!

Comments: Remember the Glacier from Deep Freeze 66 -67. Was on board the Eastwind at McMurdo Sound the night the Glacier got stuck and need to be freed. It had a sign on the flight deck saying "Follow Me". Of course things couldn't be left alone, the Eastwind crew went over the side one night and painted on the stern of the Glacier, "Follow Who?" I did get a chance to go on board the Glacier and was very impressed with the 4 Fairbanks side by side in B2. Best of luck with the restoration. It's great seeing history kept alive for the younger generation can see and hopefully learn from.

Comments: I reported to the glacier as an SA straight from boot camp in june of 74. After getting to know the ship and the various departments I decided I wanted to be an RD. I remember Master Chief "Red" Walker teaching me to plot. On our way to DF75 we stopped at the equator for swim call. A bunch of us jumped in right away. Unfortunately the ship had not come to a complete stop yet. I remember seeing the ship getting smaller and smaller in the distance. There were sea scouts with us and many of us were getting tired. The ships boat started making round trips back to the Glacier picking up those who were in trouble and towing others by grabbing a line. I missed the line the first time. On the next trip I was towed back. I was so exhausted it was very difficult climbing back aboard. Thank God everyone was safe. After arriving In Wellington I recieved orders to RD school and left the ship for New York City. Of course there I was in NYC while the Glacier was making headlines. Fortunately after graduating I was stationed aboard the Burton Island for 4 Trips ASW75 DF76 ASW76, and DF77. I sure treasure my Icebreaker friends and memories. Thanks for preserving the Glacier.
