At that time I was, at that time the youngest person to be aboard and visit the Antartic continent at the age of 14. I also stayed aboard the ship when it became Ice bound in the Waddel sea in an attempt to assist the Ice bound General San Martin of the Argentine Navy.

Comments: I recently visited your website and was very impressed with your efforts to "Save the Glacier". I served aboard "Big Red" as a Damage Controlman from 1973 thru 1975, making 4 trips on her. (AWS-73, DF-74, DF-75 and AWS-75). On Deepfreeze 75 we sheared off one of the blades on the starboard prop while navigating through some heavy pack ice. Glacier came to a halt with a shudder. As much as we tried, we could not break free. With the Antarctic winter fast approaching, plans were made to evacuate, while maintaining a skeleton crew aboard. I was one of the first complement of crew members to be evacuated. We were airlifted to a landing strip on the Antarctic continent via our ship's helicopters where we boarded a plane and were flown to Buenos Aires. We stayed at the Sheraton Hotel there, compliments of Uncle Sam. Meanwhile, down in the ice, the wind blew the pack ice into open water where Glacier found a lead and was able to break free from her icy grip. She limped her way to Ushuaia, Argentina, at the southernmost tip of South America and tied up there while she waited for us to rejoin her. I still remember seeing "Big Red" docked in the harbor as the plane flew over the Andes Mountains and thinking how stately she looked! Those were some of the best times of my life! I was welding a crack in one of the aft lower holds one day when I etched into the bulkhead, "P.J. was here". I wonder if that message is still there. I would be interested in hearing from some of my old shipmates again after all these years. I can be reached by E-mail at "patn@m33access.com". Thank you Glacier for a lot of great memories!

A couple of weeks ago, while looking through old slides I came across roughly 100 slides of the Glacier and crew. I found slides of the Glacier in dry dock in Wellington NZ to the Ross sea to the rescue of the Polarhav and various pics of crew members -- I love the pic of the football game on the ice - titled "The Mt. Erebus Football Game". If anyone remembers my dad or is interested in copies of the pictures please contact me: jfchu379@aol.com

Comments: What a thrill to find a web site about the ship I served on from May of 1970 'til February 1972.
We took three trips north, which I experienced from B-1 engineroom. We served under Captain Roberge, whom I thought was the most "down to earth" Commanding Officer I had ever met.
I have fond memories of the "Hootananys" we had on an occasional Saturday night while underway.Everyone was allowed two precious cans of 3.2 beer.
I like to think I left my mark on the Glacier by repainting the rec room wall with an original 13 colony U.S. flag. It would have been wise to consult with some of the old salts before covering over their quotes of wisdom written in magic marker.
I would also sketch an appropriate penguin or walrus on the green cloth cover of our engineroom operating log book.
We were very fortunate to include several ports in Japan during one of our trips. We also visited Nahodtka, Russia and managed to R.&R. in Honolulu.
Nothing but fond memories of the old gal.
Love the web site. Keep up the good work.

Comments: My tour on the Glacier, both on a northern Trip 57-58 and on a southern trip 59-60 still remains alive in my heart as one of the real treasures of my life.

I was attached to the Glacier from Helicopter Utility Squadron 2 (HU-2) out of Lakehurst New Jersey. We flew both the Bell HTL-4 HUL-1 and the Sikorski HRS-1 (Horse) in places and conditions that exite me yet today. I have remained in aviation and still fly a microlight aircraft.

Once asked if someone would make a movie of my life did I believe anyone would watch it. With those adventures at that time in History, You Bet. We were not only a part of the time but creating history as well. As a young man it was difficult to really focus on what we were involved in but the hustle bustle around us painted a lasting impression that it was something to remember.

I have an unusual recall of the happenings during those years and I am always eager to share the excitement. I find that my family rolls their eyes and says, Yeh, sure Dad. Sometimes I am supported by a documentary on TV or a story in the Glacier Society news paper that vindicates me from my old man image.

I would be aboard right now helping get the Grand Old Lady under power again. I bet there is a chipping hammer somewhere aboard the Lady that still has my finger prints on it. Airdales seemed to have to much time on their hands so someone always filled our idle appendages with a hammer. We found many excuses to fly.

I will get down to help yet, I promise.
