I served on Glacier
1956-1958. Operation Deepfreeze 2&3. I was an engineman in the "A"
gang. Bob Eisenberg was in charge and he had his hands full getting
the work done with myself, Jack McCauly, Paul Keene, Dennis Ferbas,
Don Boyer, Ralph LaCorte, Ron Spiess, Tom Derr and others. We always
had to use "ether" to start the small boats in the sub-zero weather
and this was not acceptible by Navy standards. When a helicopter from
our ship went down in the freezing water, we were late to retrieve
the crew. (Think it was LDCR Costanza) Fortunatly the other icebreaker
got its boats in the water to save the pilots as we were a bit late
in getting to them.
The Glacier experience is one of the high-lites of my life, and I
look forward to staying involved in it's restoration.
I hope that any of my shipmates, whether you were on Glacier when
I was or not, will involve in the ship's restoration and our reunions.
We have a common bond with our ship that will always be very special.
Few people get the opportunity that we share. I find that the comradery
at reunions doesn't matter whether we were on Glacier at the same
time or not. It is so uniquely special.
Also, I remember Commander Lauff with his green scarf blowing in the
wind on the bridge. He was a fine Captain of our ship. I happened
to be the one taking care of the steam heat on his cruse, and I was
to check with him occasionally to make sure of his comfort. He was
always an appreciative gentleman to me when I contacted him, altho
I am quite sure that we didn't frequent the same bars and pubs while
in port. ha |

Normally I dont
read the icebreaking news but a comment from my husband ( Robert W
Atchison DC2/HTCM US Ret. )
made me look at the "mystery lady " photo. It is me The uniform is
a New Zealand nurses uniform. The shoulder devices designated what
year of nursing school we were in depending on the colour and the
number of stripes.I went to nursing school in Christchurch but had
met my husband when the Glacier was in dry dock in Wellington in 1962.
Although my husband left the Glacier in early 1964 this would probably
have been taken late that same year when the Glacier returned to New
Zealand. One of my room mates was seeing a photograher on the Glacier.
I still have some photos he took of us four nursing students on the
Galciers visits to Christchurch that year.I will send you another
photo of me in the same uniform so you can verify the identity.

I served, proudly
aboard "Big Red" as an MST in the USCG during Deep Freeze 1980. I
am so happy to find that someone has saved the beast. I have many
a fond memory of her and how she saved us from the savage sea and
a mighty storm by refusing to capsize. I will have to plan a trip
especially for a visit to her. Thank you for cherishing a yar vessel
like this. |

I do not know whether
this information is of interest but my uncle Bernhard John Lauff served
onboard the Glacier in the Antarctic around 1958.
He resigned from the Navy as a Captain around 1980 and lived in retirement
in Painswick, Gloucestershire, England. He passed away some years
ago and is survived by my aunt, Mette, now 72 years old and also living
in Painswick. They have 3 daughters living in England and in Spain.

I started with
Operation Deepfreeze in December 1954 when it was known as OP-33N.
It was not until early 1955 that it was officially named Operation
Deepfreeze in support of the IGY Operations. I was with Cdr.Frazier
(staff-TF-43 ships Ops) for the commisioning of the Mighty "G". When
Adm. Dufek Transferred to the Glacier of the return trip, all the
staff personel were transferred also. During my time until Norfolk
I made many friends including LCDR.Schermerhorn. I think the Restoration
is wonderful and if in better physical health, would participate in
th rework. God speed shipmates. |

Seeing your site
is bringing memories.
It was back in feb/mar-60, our vessel, the Kista Dan, was stuck in
the ice, on our duty to evacuate on of the British research stations
at mainland Antartica. The station has not had new supply for a full
year, as it has not been reach the year before due to the ice situation.
In our attemt to reach the station we got stuck in the ice.
The situation was very critical, our vessel was turned around by the
drifting ice, soon all ice around was red from the paint of our vessel,
and our hull was starting to give in.
we were all ordered to pack our back pack and bring to deck, ready
for evacuation.
We were in contact with the GLACIER, who lucky for us, was in the
area, only 4-5 days away.
Another ice breaker was closer by, the russian ice breaker LENIN,
who was only 2 days away!
As we were a charter of the british goverment, we were, in those days
,not able to use the service of the LENIN.
But LENIN came close, and keept stand by. until the arrival of the
GLACIER, at which time the situation was very critical.
After the GLACIER arrived, it lasted 3 days to get us free of the
solide ice.
During this 3 days we were invited on board the GLACIR, crossing the
ice on foot. I remember I was very impressed buy the size of the vessel
,as well as of the hospitallity we recived from all the crew.
After we were brought free, GLACIER made a survey by air, for a better
route for the base, which still had to be evacuated, but this is another
story.
The whole operation had been followed by the world press, later I
read an article of the whole operation, in which one of the officers
of the GLACIER is quoted for sayng " and then those crazy danes went
straight back into the ice", which they did.
I want to take opportunity to send a very late thank`s to GLACIER
and her crew at then.
If any of those, who were aboard then, read this, I would be pleased
to hear if any recall this incident?
I wish you all the best with the admirable project you have undertaken.
All the best Svend

Friends,
I'm the author of a history article aimed at young readers that appears
under the "Damn the Torpedoes" logo in Navy Times, an independent
weekly newspaper owned by Gannett. The newspaper reaches about 100,000
current, former, and retired sailors and their families.
Each article requires the loan of a photograph and one or more telephone
interviews with veterans or experts on the subject matter. Please
note that photograph means photograph: I do not work with digital
images in any form. Over many years, I have borrowed and returned
a lot of photos with never a problem.
We would like to do an article in this series about a Navy icebreaker
such as the GLACIER. If you would like to help by sharing memories
and reminiscences, or by lending a photo, please contact me. If you
ring me in northern Virginia at (703) 264-8950, I can return the call
to spare your phone bill. I work all day and every evening, seven
days a week.
The purpose of these articles, of course, is to honor those who came
before today's sailors. This is your chance to get some attention
for your ship.
P.S. I'm also a veteran, a retired American diplomat, and an author.
My latest book is "Air Force One," a book about presidential aircraft
and air travel.
Best wishes

I served on the
USS Burton Island on Operation deep freeze 60.I worked in the boiler
shack. We left Seattle pier 91 the last part of 1959 returning mid
1960.When I went aboard we were in Bremerton dry dock.I remember coming
back from deepfreeze 60 we had to pick up a tow in Panama to take
to Astoria. It slowed our homecoming speed to about1/3 of regular cruise
speed.
I just ran across this sight today I'm not quite ready to retire yet...If
I was i would love to spend some time helping on the project.I know
I will visit the ship on my first chance.

I had the pleasure
to take the last cruise on Glacier from 1986 to 1987. I have written
in this comments section and since then got in touch with one fellow
crewmember that is still serving our country proudly and another that
I just wrote to. I have since did a total of 26 months in Antarctica
in the civilian sector, and it was GREAT to experience two winter
overs in the coldest, driest, harshest continent this world will ever
know. At the tender age of 18, I would never of imagined a opportunity
would come my way. Thing is, when your in Antarctica, you hear about
all these neat things in and around the area, such as the ice caves,
Castle Rock, Happy Camper school. But being in the military these
things are off limits and forbidden. I wondered if all these things
were true, or just a good leg pulling going on. Yea, they exist, i've
seen em and photograhed a whole lot more. I consider myself so lucky
to hear these tales, and then go back down years later to experience
these wild exploits.
So if there's a fellow crewmember out there from the Decom crew, drop
me a line. It just proves to me how fast time goes and that was some
of the more magical times of my life; that I needed to extract and
savor a bit more.
And yea, after all these years I still to this day have dreams still
aboard 'Big Red" in my sleep.
I'm in college now getting my degree in Diesel Technology and perhaps
I can lend my talentand knowledge to Glacier.
To rewalk the decks I once did so many years ago!!
Thanks for keeping her afloat. The general public will never fathom
the feats and records that she broke and continue to keep.
The color Red dosen't fit too well amongst a white coral reef any
how!

MST2 aboard Glacier
DF81&82. There was not a better ship to learn your rate as an MST.
Lots of science and lots of great memories. Great liberty, Fiji, New
Caledonia, Australia, NZ, HI, (almost Fanning Island...if we had not
lost our anchor). Who's boat deck did we crumple in HI during REFTRA
towing ops? I am still in...reservist CWO at MSO St. Louis. Would
like to hear from anyone who sailed with me. |

It is exciting
to read of the extraordinary progress that you have made. I wish that
I could lend a hand but it is a long way from North Yorkshire in the
UK to San Francisco. I return in July and hope that there will be
some chores left that I can take on.

I've been on your
list from the beginning and wish I was closer and could play an active
role in this effort. Unfortunately a full time profession in San Diego
precludes me from getting away. I just wanted to thank you for the
regular updates and news. You guys are running the most impressive
and professional effort of this kind that I have ever seen and there
is no doubt in my mind that is why you have been so successful.
I served with operation Deep Freeze for three seasons 20 years ago
and while I don't remember the Glacier, I remember a lot of other
ice breakers and their crews during those years. A great bunch of
people. Watching them cut ice from the air will always be something
I remember.
Keep up the good work and a small check in support of your operation
will be in the mail.

I reported to the
Glacier straight from boot camp in july 1974 as a SA. While underway
on Operation Deep Freeze I recieved orders to radar school. I left
the Glacier in Wellington at Christmas in 1974. After school I reported
to the Burton Island and served there for two years. |

My father served
on the USS Glacier in 1955-56 for the first
Operation Deepfreeze. His name was Arthur(Art) Faller.
I am presently sorting through many hundreds of slides
which Dad took in the Antarctic during Operation Deepfreeze I & II.
They are still well preserved, and I hope to scan them to be put on
CD disks.
If you knew Dad from the Antarctic operations I would be happy to
hear from you. Rick
