I was dropped on
board the Glacier from a helicopter as the ship was returning from
the antartic with 3 Sea Scouts. I don't remember the Dates. The ship
had lost 2 blades off one of her screws and could not make real great
speed but was doing about 9 knots. I was with 3 other members of the
Naval Reserve Combat Camera Group from Los Alamitos, Ca. We filmed
the return to Home Port from the ship as other members of our unit
filmed from land. I was the only one in our group who did not get
sea sick. That ship did a lot of rolling. I was a Photographers Mate.

I served as a MST2
in 1976-77 and did 2 trips to Barrow, AK and a South Trip in between.
They were the best 2 years of my life. I had no idea there was an
effort to save the ship. I hope to visit within the year.

SERVED IN GLACIER
64-65 OIC OF HC-4 HELO DETACHMENT. AS AN AIRDALE IT WAS A KICK IN
THE BUTT TO HAVE THE CONTROLS OF 21,000 SHAFT HORSEPOWER AT THE TIP
OF YOUR FINGERS.STANDING WATCHES ON THE BRIDGE AND IN LOFT CON WERE
SOME OF THE GREAT EXPERIENCES OF MY NAVY CAREER AND ALWAYS THOUGHT
THAT THE GLACIER CRUISE LAID THE FOUNDATION FOR MY NAVY CAREER. I
WAS A LT ON THIS CRUISE AND EVENTUALLY ATTAINED THE RANK OF CAPT.
SOMEWHAT OF A FOOT NOTE TO THE CRUISE WAS A RESCUE OF SEVERAL MOUNTAIN
CLIMBERS IN NEW ZEALAND WHILE WE HAPPENED TO BE IN PORT DURING THE
HOLIDAYS 1964. AT THAT TIME THE NEW ZEALAND MILITARY HAD NO HELOS.
OUR CH-19 WERE THE ONLY ONES CAPABLE TO TAKE THE RESCUE TEAMS HIGH
ENOUGH IN THE MOUNTAINS TO REACH THE INJURED CLIMBERS IN TIME TO SAVE
THEIR LIVES, WHICH WE DID. THE GLACIER NEVER DID GET THE CREDIT IT
DESERVED IN THIS RESCUE. THIS RESCUE AND THE SUBSEQUENT PUBLIC OUTCRY
GAVE FUEL TO THE NZ MILITARY TO CONVINCE THE POWERS TO BE TO GET HELOS
FOR THE MILITARY. |

Awesome website.
I was a FA/FN on DF 86-87. Worked in B-3 Engine Room. I think I signed
my name (in black marker)somewhere in B-3 on the last day I was on-board,
which was the decoomissioning day in Portland, OR. If any volunteers
find it somewhere in B-3, would you please let me know and maybe send
me a digital pic. :) What a great time for an 18 year old right out
of high school. Traveled to some great, exotic ports. I have walked
on all 7 continents in my 18 years in the military. Great fun. Great
friends. I retire in 2 years from the military........who knows, maybe
I could stand an oiler watch in B-3 for a deployment. I still have
the required engineering drawings of all the systems. Still remember
transferring fuel, bilge diving, changing out piston cylinder sleeves,
cleaning out intake screens.......and those darn pesky fuel/water
seperator discs. Yuck. MKC Pierson was sure a hardcase.....but what
a MASTER mechanic. LOL :) Hope you get her sea-worthy again and my
hats off to all the volunteers. FOLLOW ME!!! |

(DF80, DF81 and DF82) – Damn, it is great seeing the names of my old
shipments here!!!! When I visited this site and the related sites
, I started to relive those fantastic years. If I had known the importance
of those years at the time, I would have bought all three cruise books.
I was frugal and only have the DF80 book. • The times on the fantail:
drinking coffee mixed with hot chocolate, country music in the background,
performing piston coring operations led by Dr. John B. Anderson. •
Bumping the dirty berg with the ship’s bow; attempting to get a sample
using plastic piston coring sleeves. • Of course, the loss of the
LCVP will always be remembered and recounted. • The Fanning Island
incident; I was in ops berthing at the time and can give a description
of the ever-accelerating-sound/vibration coming from the anchor windlass,
followed by silence. • Which Deep Freeze did we loose a screw on the
way to Punta Arenas? • Steadily making way through the pack ice in
the Ross Sea, surrounded by a brown ice fog with the odor of sulfur
due to an erupting Mount Erebus. This was true adventure bordering
on science fiction. No job since has enriched me more nor giving me
a greater feeling of accomplishment than I experienced on Big Red
with so many good friends. |

I REMEMBER THROWING
UP A LOT. THE HULL ON THAT THING WAS BUILT LIKE A FOOTBALL. 55 DEGREE
ROLLS WERE NOT UNUSUAL. I HAD A SEAT BELT TO HOLD ME IN THE CHAIR
BUT, I HAD TO HOLD THE TYPEWRITER TOGETHER WHILE I COPIED CODE OR
THE CARRAGE WOULD FLY BACK AND FORTH. THERE WERE THREE SAFES IN THE
RADIO ROOM, NOT INCLUDING THOSE IN THE ON LINE AND OFF LINE CRYPTO
ROOMS, AND THE WELDS ON THE ONE NEXT TO ME STARTED TO BRAKE. I JUST
KNEW I WAS GOING TO DIE WHEN IT FINALLY GAVE WAY. ABOUT THREE DAYS
OUT I COPIED DOWN A MSG. THAT WAS ADDRESSED TO ME. I WAS A FATHER.
120 FOOT SEAS ARE NO FUN. IT'S LIKE BEING IN THE MOUNTAINS. THE CREST
OF THE WAVES LOOK LIKE SNOW. WHEN WE CROSSED THE EQUATOR IT WAS SO
HOT THE SHEETS ON MY BUNK SMELLED LIKE SMOKE. I THOUGHT THEY WOULD
BURST INTO FLAMES AT ANY TIME. RUNNING WATER IN THE SINKS TO SEE WHICH
WAY IT TURNED. WHEN WE WERE IN THE ICE IT WAS LIKE LIVING IN A DRUM
AND TRYING TO SLEEP THROUGH ALL THAT NOISE. AT LEAST IT WAS A LITTLE
COOLER IN THE RADIO ROOM. THEN THERE WAS THE OTHER EXTREME. SUN GLASSES
WITH PLASTIC COVERED FRAMES SO THE METAL WOULDN'T STICK TO YOUR SKIN.
(LIKE A TONGUE STUCK TO THE BOTTOM OF A METAL ICE TRAY) THE RED LIGHTS
WERE ON IN THE SHIP SO IT MUST BE NIGHT TIME. CHECKING OUT THE PENGUINS,
SEALS (IF THEY DIDN'T WANT TO GET RUN OVER WHY DIDN'T THEY MOVE?)
FLYING FISH, AND THE GREEN FLASH. KODIAK, DUTCH HARBOR, CHRISTCHURCH,
WELLINGTON, CAMBEL ISLAND, PEARL HARBOR, MCMURDO, CASEY STATION. WE
FOUND THAT SAILBOAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR. FIXED THEIR BROKEN MAST,
GAVE THEM GROCERIES, INSULIN, AND SENT THEM ON THERE WAY, AND WE ON
OURS. BACK HOME, THAT'S WHERE WE ALL WANTED TO BE. BUT WOULDN'T HAVE
MISSED IT FOR THE WORLD. FOLLOW ME RULES! |

So she still floats!
I was on her last mission, DF 86-87. People had told me that she was
used as target practice for the Navy, which the Coast Guard sold back
to her for one dollar, after the navy gave it to the Guard!
I have had night after night of dreams still living in her decks.
I even had one dream where she was commissioned again and needed ex
Glacier people to run her for a quick turnaround mission.
I have thought about this ship quite a bit since I left her decks
in 87. In fact, I know all the names displayed in the photo gallery
for the engine room. Chief White, Mark Degroot, who I later served
on USCGC Polar Star with later,Jones, McFadden, and the rest of the
diesel boys. Glad to hear that you recognize her feats. She was in
fact, a truely incredible ship for her time, and still holds records
yet to be beat. I have been to New Zealand on a number of occasions
and have seen her model in the Canterbury Museum. It's a special thing
when you are directly linked to something, and no one around you knows
that relationship.
Wow. I wonder what I will dream of tonight?
You have a historic gem on your hands. Don't let her be turned into
a artificial reef.
Follow me....forever.

Good to see things
happening here. I did my first tour out of Bootcamp on the GLACIER.
It was Deepfreeze 87', her last, I was a SN then and have many memories
of that trip. Including helping paint the whole ship inside and out
the last time.
Right now I am again on a DECOMM Crew for another distinguished Coast
Guard Cutter. This time it is the USCGC SEDGE (WLB 402) she will Be
Decommisionned Nov 15th 2002.
I am Crossdecking to the USCGC HICKORY (WLB-412) over the winter.
I look forward to seeing the GLACIER again someday!

Tour of duty aboard
the USCGC Glacier "Deep Freeze 1980" As a landlubber the South trip

back on this time I know that GOD was with the crew of the Glacier
