House
Bill #2585 was passed in a meeting of the House of Representatives.
Attached to the Defense Authorization Bill, House Bill #2585 and
it’s pending companion Senate BIll #1450, allow the transfer of
GLACIER to the Glacier Society. Once both bills have been approved,
they will then go on to the President for final approval.
This
recent success is owed to the undying support of Connecticut’s Congressman
Christopher Shays and Senators Christopher Dodd and Joseph Lieberman.
Having realized the historical value and scientific potential involved
in restoring GLACIER, Connecticut’s major political figures have
been behind the Glacier Society from the start.

PHIL
JAFFE'S BOOK ABOUT THE NORTHWIND
Offered at a 20% discount for Glacier Society
Members

Phil
Jaffe's book "The 1954 Historic Arctic Adventure of the NORTHWIND"
describes a little known icebreaker expedition. As a 19 year old,
Phil made history on board the Coast Guard Cutter NORTHWIND when
she became the first ship to conquer the McClure Strait and chart
a corridor through the Northwest Passage. The McClure Strait is
the passage that connects the Beaufort Sea with Melville Sound and
eventually leads to Baffin Bay. NORTHWIND, in company with the Navy
icebreaker BURTON SOUND, battled 15 foot ice to gain a passage through
McClure Strait. Once in Melville Sound, NORTHWIND rendezvoused with
the new Canadian Icebreaker LABRADOR (which was coming from the
East Coast). They headed back to the West Coast, and LABRADOR continued
south through the Panama Canal and became the first ship to circumnavigate
the North American continent.
Phil's
account is a refreshing tale of the Arctic as seen through the eyes
of a young Coast Guard seaman. About half the book consists of the
story of Phil's epic voyage through the McClure Strait and his first
trip to Alaskan waters through the Bering Sea to Nome. The other
half includes 50 of Phil's wonderful pictures of the Arctic, supporting
material and copies of newspaper and LIFE Magazine articles. There
are also maps to help the reader plot the voyages, a feature that
many authors neglect. The book is the size of a large paperpack
and has 121 pages.
After his tour as a Coast Guardsman, Phil had a subsequent career
as a publisher of magazines and newspapers and as an author. He
spent six years with the Los Angeles Lakers and wrote about legends
such as Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West
