Dear
Mr. Koether:
I have
reviewed the information provided regarding the vessel Glacier.
I agree with your conclusion that the ship is eligible for listing
in the National Register under Criteria A, B and C. Furthermore,
it meets the requirements of Criteria Consideration G for designating
properties achieving significance within the past fifty years: the
contributions of the ship are exceptional. The powerful icebreaker
Glacier, flagship of Rear Admiral Richard Byrd, was a critical element
in the United States' explorations of Antarctica and the Arctic.
It is distinguished for its association with a number of important
scientific discoveries, most notably during the International Geophysical
Year of 1957-1958. In my opinion, the vessel is significant at the
national level.
I commend
your efforts to preserve the ship and I wish you every success in
your pursuit of financial support. If I can be of further assistance,
please let me know.
Sincerely,
Dr.
Knox Mellon
State Historic Preservation Officer
