| A celebrated icebreaker
ship, once known as "the free world's most powerful,"
has been nominated for placement on the National Register of Historic
Places.
The USS Glacier, a 310-foot-long ship capable of penetrating ice
up to 6-feet thick, is anchored in Suisun Bay with the Federal Reserve
Fleet.
The ship, built in 1955, is the only remaining icebreaker afloat
of the original U.S. Navy's Ice Breaker Fleet.
In its heyday, the Glacier was a key early explorer of the Arctic
and the Antarctic in the late-1950s and 1960s.
The 8,915 ton ship was designed with special features to make it
more effective in tackling the toughest ice-breaking chores.
The Glacier served the Navy and U.S. Coast Guard until 1987.
