Louis
E. Rutkowski Age 79, of Wilmington, DE and formerly of Norfolk,
VA, died Monday, July 8, 2002 at the Parkview Nursing Center.
For
the past year, the competent, caring and compassionate staff of
Parkview were totally instructional in providing him with a quality
of life equal to that of a loving family. Lou was the beloved husband
for 52 years to the late Mary Subda Rutkowski, who passed away in
1998. Lou was born and raised on 7th Street in Wilmington's eastside.
He joined the US Navy and proudly served his country for 30 years.
He retired as a Chief Petty Officer. "Ski" was a machinist having
served aboard many ships including the USS Mississippi, the USS
New Jersey and his all time favorite the USS Glacier, an icebreaker
that took Lou on expeditions to Antarctica, South Pole. After retirement
he became a Civil Service Training Instructor, in the Amphibian
Engineering Field, in which he was deemed an expert in all phases
of Amphibian Maintenance. He authored a manual and initiated a training
program for instructors while serving as the Chief of the Powertrain
Committee. Lou was a life member of the Glacier Society as well
as a member and supporter of many other organizations. Lou had an
inventive spirit and enjoyed many hobbies including designing and
hand tooling leather items. He also did lathe woodworking, photography,
and cooking. He was a good neighbor and devoted friend to many,
especially his Glacier shipmates and enjoyed sharing through his
story telling.
Lou
is survived by a brother, Henry Rutkowski; and a sister, Dorothy
Ciuffetelli, both of Wilmington, DE; as well as several nieces,
nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews. Among those are
nephew, Manual Subda and his wife Linda and their daughter, Alison
and Siobhan, who brought him joy and comfort; his buddy, nephew,
Michael Subda; and his devoted niece, Bernadette Drozd, who cared
for him and was his constant assistant.
