Stratford, CT-based international Glacier Society recently expressed
its appreciation to the Maritime Administration (MARAD) for its
assistance in the Society’s ongoing restoration of the historic
icebreaker, the USS/USCGC Glacier.
Bernard G. Koether II of Westport, Society chairman, presented
a plaque of recognition and appreciation in Washington, D.C. to
Captain William Schubert, MARAD head. The recognition cited the
support and collaboration Captain Schubert and his MARAD staff in
Washington and San Francisco have provided the Glacier Society in
its efforts to return the Glacier to the Polar seas.
The Glacier Society is dedicated to returning the icebreaker,
in service to the US Navy and, subsequently, the US Coast Guard,
from 1955 until 1987 to the Arctic. Since 1987, the Glacier
has been in the reserve fleet administered by MARAD in Suisun Bay,
near San Francisco, CA.
Once refitted and redeployed, the Glacier will serve
as a medical and humanitarian delivery vehicle to the indigenous
peoples in all of the circumpolar countries. In addition, she will
provide much-needed marine and environmental research capability
and serve as an educational platform to provide real time science
content to classrooms worldwide via the Internet.
